Emerson Fittipaldi and Al Unser Jr. battled wheel to wheel in the closing stages of the 1989 Indianapolis 500 until their cars touched on the 199th of 200 laps. Watch the race broadcast.
As they came upon lapped traffic on the penultimate lap of "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing," neither driver was about to lift off the accelerator. It provided one of the most memorable moments in race history, when the cars of Emerson Fittipaldi and Al Unser Jr. touched in the short chute between Turns 3 and 4 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It sent Unser Jr. careening into the wall and Fittipaldi on to victory.
Unser Jr. held no grudges afterward.
"Emmo wanted the race as bad as I did," he said. "When you've got two race car drivers wanting the Indy 500 as bad as we did at that point, we're both going to go in the corner and only one man's going to come out. This time it was Emmo who came out."
As we continue honoring great races of the past, this one ranks up with the best. Watch and enjoy.
