The 2007 Verizon IndyCar Series championship came down to two drivers, Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon, who waged a battle in the season finale at Chicagoland Speedway that was good to the last drop, or lap.
Driving for Andretti Green Racing, Dario Franchitti took a three-point lead over Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing into the Peak Antifreeze 300 at Chicagoland Speedway. Each driver knew that whoever had the higher finish would likely be the 2007 INDYCAR champion and they waged a race-long duel at the front.
Franchitti, who won his first Indianapolis 500 earlier in the season, started on pole in search of his first series championship. Dixon, seeking his second title, started sixth. They battled near the front the entire 200 laps and were running first and second when the green flag waved for a final restart with two laps to go. But both were precariously low on fuel, and only one made it to the checkered flag before running out.
