In honor of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca returning to the INDYCAR schedule in 2019, we've dusted off the broadcast from the greatest Indy car finish in the track's history.
With today's announcement that Indy car racing is returning to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, we thought it more than appropriate to resurrect one of the most-remembered finishes in the sport's history.
The race was final round of the 1996 season and is best remembered for what’s come to be known as “The Pass” among Indy car fans. Then a sensational Indy car rookie, Alex Zanardi completed one of the most unbelievable passes ever when he darted around Bryan Herta in the famous Corkscrew to win the race as teammate Jimmy Vasser collected the CART season championship.
Herta, driving for Team Rahal, was vying for his first win and had led 40 laps. Behind them, Scott Pruett passed Vasser for third place, but fourth was good enough for Vasser to claim the first of four straight championships for Chip Ganassi Racing. Relive the race broadcast here.
