Less than three months after claiming his fourth Indianapolis 500 title, Rick Mears held off Arie Luyendyk by 3.143 sec. to win the 1991 Marlboro 500 at Michigan International Speedway.
Rick Mears scored all 29 of his Indy car wins as a member of Team Penske, making him one of the most successful American drivers to race for Roger Penske's team.
So it's no surprise that fans have selected Mears' final win with the team - the 1991 Marlboro 500 from Michigan International Speedway, as this week's Classic Rewind race.
Mears, who started from the pole in the No. 3 Marlboro Team Penske Penske-Chevrolet, dueled with Arie Luyendyk for much of the final half of the 500-mile race.
But when the Dutchman was penalized for jumping a restart, Mears took control of the race. A late-race restart gave Luyendyk a chance to challenge for the win, but Mears was able to fend off the challenge and complete a sweep of 500-milers at Indianapolis and Michigan.
