This week's Classic Rewind features the closest finish in Indy car racing history, the 2002 Delphi Indy 300 at Chicagoland Speedway.
The Verizon IndyCar Series has been known of late for great championship battles. By another fan request, we'll show one of the first ones.
With the 2002 IndyCar Series championship coming down to the wire, three drivers headed to the penultimate race at Chicagoland Speedway within eight points of each other. Helio Castroneves led the points standings ahead of teammate Gil de Ferran and Sam Hornish Jr.
Hornish won the pole for the Delphi Indy 300 in his Panther Racing Chevrolet and the field often raced wheel-to-wheel for lap after lap. The race also marked the series debut for Dan Wheldon, who was brought in as a teammate to Hornish.
Of course, why we're showing the race is the finish. In a late race duel, Hornish held off Al Unser Jr. in what remains the closest finish in Indy car racing history, 0.0024 of a second. Don't blink at the end, you might miss it.
