Sights and tastes of St. Pete
There really isn't a better place in North America to kick off the NTT IndyCar Series season than St. Petersburg, Florida. Palm trees, warm skies, cool breezes and incredible sights. Team Penske's Simon Pagenaud and fellow traveler Norman, his Jack Russell terrier, enjoyed the scenery along the bay and stopped by one of St. Pete's signature restaurants.
Geronimo!
Prior to track activity, Conor Daly, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Graham Rahal visited MacDill Air Force Base to take a tour of the facility and express their gratitude for the people who make U.S. Special Operations Command run around the clock. One of the highlights of the visit was the parachute rigger shed, where drivers experienced virtual reality skydiving simulators. Wearing VR headsets and harnesses attached to a rig, Daly, Rahal and Hunter-Reay tried to land on a target from tens of thousands of feet in the virtual sky.
Time for a haircut?
Back in the 1970s, legendary New York Yankees team owner George Steinbrenner started a policy among his players, instructing all players and coaches could not have hair grown below the collar. Over the offseason, his grandson and NTT IndyCar Series team owner George Steinbrenner IV cut his long locks for something crisp and professional. As for his driver, Colton Herta, the hair is still flowing, for now.
And yes, count us in for seeing the Mohawk return to the paddock.
Like father, like sons?
A day at the track definitely beats any day in the office. However, when the family visits you "at the office," it's just as good. Such is the case with Ryan Hunter-Reay, whose three sons are growing up right before our eyes in the fast lane.
Two coffees, with ...
Immediately following the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Will Power jetted off to Austin, Texas, to South-By-Southwest (SXSW) for an intriguing Q&A session with motorsports icon Mario Andretti. When two Indianapolis 500 champions get together for breakfast, you can be assured there's a little milk added to their coffee.
Warm weather, warmer feelings
Perhaps the story from St. Petersburg was seeing Arrow Schimidt Peterson Motorsports driver Robert Wickens back with us on site, at the racetrack. Inspiration knows no boundaries. So, too, is true of his friendship with James Hinchcliffe. After St. Pete, the two set off for a little R&R in the Bahamas. Let's just hope they're using the proper sunscreen.
