Marco Andretti posts fastest practice lap at Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Twenty-four drivers tested their car's aerodynamic package-Firestone tire grip on the 1.5-mile, high-banked Texas Motor Speedway during the 75-minute early afternoon practice preceding qualifications for the Firestone 550.

The 25th IZOD IndyCar Series race at the speedway is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. (ET) June 8 on ABC.

IZOD IndyCar Series championship points co-leader Marco Andretti, driving the No. 25 RC Cola car for Andretti Autosport, topped the speed chart with a best lap of 217.950 mph (24.0330 seconds). Tony Kanaan, driving the No. 11 car for KV Racing Technology-SH Racing with the new Sunoco "Turbo" livery, was second (217.577 mph) and Will Power (216.938 mph) was third in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske car.

James Jakes, who scored a career-best runner-up finish in Race 2 of the Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit on June 2, was fourth on the speed chart (216.825) in the No. 16 Acorn Stairlifts car for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Simona De Silvestro, driving the No. 78 Nuclear Entergy Areva car for KV Racing Technology, was fifth (216.758).

De Silvestro will incur a 10-grid spot penalty for the 228-lap Firestone 550 because of an unapproved engine following the event at Belle Isle.

Rule 15.5.7.2 regarding in-race failure was violated: The engine manufacturer must inform its INDYCAR engine support engineer of the engine failure within five hours of the end of the race.
