Astor Challenge Cup

Simply put, Juan Pablo Montoya will lift the Astor Cup – the Verizon IndyCar Series championship trophy – Aug. 30 at Sonoma Raceway if he finishes first or second in the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma.

Or if he finishes third and Graham Rahal doesn’t win the season finale on the 2.385-mile, 12-turn road course and collect all the bonus points.

Beyond those scenarios, please consult the points possibilities chart below for the six title contenders entering the 85-lap race that is worth double base points.

INDYCAR announced that the championship-deciding race would be contested as scheduled after it announced the passing of Verizon IndyCar Series driver Justin Wilson, who succumbed Aug. 24 to a head injury sustained in a race a day earlier.

Montoya padded his lead over Rahal from nine to 34 points in the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway when he advanced a field-high 16 positions relative to his qualifying spot to finish third and Rahal was collected in a Lap 93 incident that relegated the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver to 20th place.

Montoya, who has finished in the top 10 in all 11 500-mile Indy car races he’s competed, won’t be bothered by the specter of double points or what the other contenders are doing.

“Same thing as every week: Go out there and do the best we can, see what happens,” said Montoya, who won CART title in 1999. “It's double points, so it's open for anything. I feel if we run a smart day all day, we'll be fine.”
