In April, Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport qualified third in the No. 28 DHL car and won for the second consecutive year. Teammate Marco Andretti was runner-up and 2013 Verizon IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon finished third.

The event weekend -- the fifth on the Verizon IndyCar Series schedule -- will be the sixth consecutive year that the scenic but challenging venue in Birmingham, Ala., has hosted the series.

Barber Motorsports Park recently opened a proving grounds -- a track area and wet/dry skidpad. The $4 million complex, which is adjacent to the race course, will be used for product debuts, corporate outings, safety instruction, driving schools and karting events. It also will be utilized for spectator parking during the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama.

The first customer of the Proving Grounds is Mercedes-Benz USA, which is already using the facility for its employee "Brand Immersion Experience." The program, announced in September during an event at the German automaker's Tuscaloosa County plant, will bring about 26,000 workers from around the world to Birmingham over the next four years. They will visit the plant and drive Mercedes vehicles.
